Science Meets Music

Join Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience for the first Science Meets Music of the 2025 season! Our speaker will be Dr. Elisabeth Binder, Scientific Director at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry and our musical guests are Joy Berendt, Vocalist and Dr. Patricia Izbicki, Pianist
Exposure to adversity, including exposure to traumatic events, is among the strongest risk factor for later development of psychiatric disorders. In a world with increasing insecurities, it’s important to better understand how adversity, stress and trauma alter risk for psychiatric disorders, so that we can better prevent lasting consequences and more effectively treat patients.
This presentation will highlight molecular mechanisms of how environmental exposures can have lasting effects on our brain – but also the rest of our body and the relevance of exposures during different developmental times of our lives. We will also explore how cutting-edge human cerebral organoids can help model the effects of stress in prenatal exposures. The presentation will also show how the impact of adverse exposure can be moderated by inherited genetic variations.
Finally, learn how Dr. Binder’s exciting research could be used for prevention and intervention of neuropsychiatric disorders.
