Sensory Storytelling, the Brain and Star Trek

July 17th, 2025
Posted bySarah DeLong

Hello! I’m a voice artist building a presentation for a fandom convention—and I’d love to connect with neuroscience professionals for advice and conversation.

I’m writing “Comfort in the Captain’s Chair: Cozy Sci-Fi and Sensory Storytelling” (description below)—grounded in my experience in language, literacy, and mindful somatic facilitation. I hope to demonstrate that familiar and soothing sensory input is necessary for resilience, regulation, and wellbeing. This presentation will be part of a larger conversation at the convention about the trajectory of science fiction and the rising popularity of eco-punk and solar-punk sub-genres.

If your research touches on sensory processing or narrative cognition—or if you’re also a science fiction fan and would like to talk about it—I’d love to connect.

Channels open, Captain!

Presentation App Description:

In this cozy-brainy session, we explore how Star Trek gives us more than warp drives and space battles. It offers us comforting rituals, models of emotional regulation, and soft moments amidst chaos. You'll leave with a sensory storytelling toolkit, cozy character case studies, and practical ways to become the calm voice on your own bridge. Part cozy fandom talk, part voiceover insight, part gentle guide to being the captain of your own life. Perfect for anyone who’s ever cried at Discovery, felt seen by Lower Decks, or craved a weighted blanket and a cup of tea on the holodeck.
