The screen as a device and structure in modern and contemporary imagery

March 20th, 2026 - March 22nd, 2026
University of Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, Department of Philosophy, 12 Place du Panthéon - Room 216, France

Study days dedicated to the screen structure as it appears in the performance Here Are the Dragons – a collective creation by the Théâtre du Soleil in collaboration with Hélène Cixous, directed by Ariane Mnouchkine

The event “The Screen as Device and Structure in Modern and Contemporary Imagery” proposes to compare the results of recent research in art history, theatre studies, and philosophy. Each discipline has observed, in its own way, a phenomenon of rupture between artworks and viewers. This shared observation forms the central theme of the contributions as a whole, articulated through the introduction of the new concept of the “screen”.

The rupture we refer to indicates a structural change in the way artworks affect us, particularly in relation to the artistic devices of the contemporary “iconic situation” (Bruno Haas). It manifests itself through the perception of the artist’s body, the design of the scenographic object, and the relationship that the viewer establishes with the contemporary work. Our aim is to foreground the elements of a new language adapted to the description of contemporary phenomena, which have been unanimously observed across these different disciplines. In harmony with Hélène Cixous, Annette Kurz, Andreï Molodkine, Xristina Penna, Olga Kisseleva and Bruno Haas.

The event will last three days. The 20th of March in the Sorbonne, the 21th in the Cartoucherie (Vincenne), on the 22th of March at the House of Egypt (Cité Universitaire). Here, you will find a brief pitch outlining the event’s objectives, and a link to access the themes and speakers: https://philosophie.pantheonsorbonne.fr/evenements/poser-lecran-ici-sont-dragons
