Tuning in: How music may affect your heart

March 30th, 2021
Cambridge, MA, United States
Music engages a rich, interconnected brain network that involves much more than just auditory processing. For that reason, music has long been implicated in cognitive benefits, but this article highlights recent research that shows music's positive effects on the heart.

Abstract/Description

Whether you prefer Stravinsky's symphonies or the Beatles' ballads, you probably listen mostly because you simply like how they sound. You might not realize that music engages not only your auditory system but many other parts of your brain as well, including areas responsible for movement, language, attention, memory, and emotion.
