I'm a Neuroscientist creating dynamic, responsive sensory environments that support health and wellbeing and improve quality of life in a number of patient populations and complementing both built and natural environments. NeuroSense is my consulting practice, and I'm about to launch a new venture that develops new sensory modalities and measures their efficacy and effects on the user.

I'm the Founder of NeuroSense. A Translational Scientist, I have worked for the past 20 years in the field of brain-environment interactions, developing alternatives to drug use to improve health outcomes. For the past several years I have been working on the development of spectrally tunable LED lighting arrays and protocols, which complement existing methods for treatment of a number of neurological and psychiatric conditions in both elderly and childhood populations. Recently I have begun to apply this to the development of Phygital spaces, responsive dynamic environments, and immersive experiences for medical, health, and wellness applications.

I am also a serial entrepreneur, having founded or co-founded and managed technology start-up companies over the past 17 years in a number of life science areas. For several years I was an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the University of Utah.

I have over 30 years of experience in pharmaceutical drug design and discovery, and research project management and implementation divided between academia and the pharmaceutical industry. I received training in medical sciences and neuroscience, theoretical and applied biotechnology, integrative neuroscience, and rainforest ethnobotany. I am the author of over 20 publications in scientific journals and books in the areas of drug design, drug discovery, neuro-biochemistry, and marine biochemistry. I have also written over 30 technology articles in the popular press.

I was an NIH postdoctoral research fellow in the Neuroscience Program at the University of Utah. I hold a PhD (Biomedical Sciences, Columbia University), an MPhil (Pathology, Columbia), an MS (Psychobiology, Univ. of Florida, and a BA (Biology, Kalamazoo College). I also held pharmaceutical research positions at The Upjohn Company, CIBA-Geigy, and Syntex Pharmaceuticals.

I am a member of the Research and Science Advisory Panels and the Hospitality Technical Committee of the IES (Illuminating Engineering Society), a Founding Member of the World Experience Organization, and also serve on the Science Advisory Boards of the LESA Center at RPI (Lighting Enabled Systems and Applications) and the Bronowski Institute of Behavioral Neuroscience in Victoria, Australia.

Interests

I'm interested in the Neurological and Psychological effects of sensory-enhanced physical spaces, and the integration of Digital content and triggers into those spaces to create "Phygital" environments. I'm also interested in developing and applying methods of assessing effects and outcomes of time spent in these spaces. Over the past few years I have been also working on the development of spaces and methods that induce non-drug-based mind states (such as changes in interception and exteroception, body dissolution, hallucinogenic experiences and "presence") as an alternative to Psychedelic drug use.
