I am a longtime faculty member at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where my teaching and research focus on population health, the social determinants of health, and the design and evaluation of health improvement programs.

My work reflects a longstanding interest in bridging scientific and humanistic disciplines. In particular, I have explored how creative expression can mitigate illness and enhance wellbeing, and I have become an advocate for integrating creative engagement alongside traditional medical care as a pathway to healing.

I am the President and Founder of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit The Foundation for Art & Healing, and I lead its signature initiative, Project UnLonely, which uses arts-based tools and programs to help address loneliness and social disconnection.

In 2023, Penguin Random House published my book, Project UnLonely: Healing Our Crisis of Disconnection. In the book, I explore the personal and societal roots of loneliness and offer insights into how meaningful connection can be nurtured and sustained. I also discuss how engaging in creativity can be an important component of the healing process.

I graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University in the Science and Human Affairs program. I received my medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed my internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. I am board-certified in both Preventive Medicine and Internal Medicine and hold dual master’s degrees in Epidemiology and Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

A published poet, I received the Bain-Swiggett Prize from Princeton University and the American Academy of Poets Prize from the University of Pennsylvania.
