Jessie Marie Beals

Jessie Marie, visual artist
Artistic Purpose:
Create art as a philosophical intervention to question perception, cognition, and reality, while fostering deeper reflection in viewers.
Artistic Ethos:
Limit mediation of my art thus allowing viewers to construct their own perception, response, and understanding.
My artistic practice is a reflection of concepts gained through my research in philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, cultural critique and meditation. I am interested in visual information, human cognition and the concept of reality intersect. through my research I found neuroarts, which put a name to what I have been engaged in for several decades.
I employ various photographic techniques to guide the subject matter and composition of my images this includes distorting how I take in visual information through my lens and expanding my own cognitive processes during image creation through mindful observation and somatic awareness.
The conceptual nature of my work comes full circle when my images are viewed, it is only then that they can serve as a means to stimulate diverse brain activity which can lead to higher‑order meaning‑making, and the broadening of approaches to constructing reality.
Interests
My current projects are focused on countering the cognitive, and existential impacts of the hyperconnected world; with my work serving as a philosophical intervention. I have a unique perspective through my work in the cyber/tech field and having children ages 24 and 14 who have grown up with technology permeating their lives. My perspective has shifted my work from exploring art to represent states of consciousness to this project investigating how abstract art can offer opportunities for contemplation, and critical engagement that resists the shallow constructs of the digital age.
I am interested in neuroarts related to:
- Cognitive impacts from overexposure to social media
- Art's ability to improve cognitive processes to deepen reality construction
- Subliminal Perception
- Neuroplastic adaptation; as it applies to dementia and TBIs
-Neuroplasticity through meditation
