Karen Hudes

A writer reflecting on the mind through art, language and nature. I’m interested in helping to support people who are vulnerable or in crisis – honoring the needs, self-knowledge and pace of the individual, ideally within community – and would love to be part of a team sharing in this vision. Meeting others in NYC and elsewhere with similar interests would be great too.
Writer, editor and game designer in Brooklyn. Much of my creative work is solo, but I would love to see what’s possible in developing collective projects. A growing part of what I do is devoted to understanding the expressive, meaningful qualities of heightened states, and supporting the voices of people who have experienced these states.
Connecting all of the subjects above, I’d like to share an essay I wrote, “Diode,” which is both a personal story (largely taking place in the 1990s) and an exploration of ideas. If you check it out, much appreciation, and I welcome responses – the link is below.
Another project that was special to me was serving as a private editor to the authors of The Healing Power of Community (Routledge, 2024), about the founding of a community-driven health center for people living with HIV and AIDS in the late ’80s and early ‘90s, and how lessons from that time apply to mutual aid today. Lusijah Marx, the co-founder, valued listening to one’s inner wisdom, and has taught me a lot about that.
These are all hefty subjects, but I also love light stuff – playfulness, humor, food. One of my favorite recent group activities was meeting weekly to talk about films.
I earned my BA in Comparative Literature at Brown University, and an MFA in fiction writing at Hunter College, where I also taught creative writing. In 2022 I was a writer in residence at Byrdcliffe Arts Colony in Woodstock, NY, and I’ve also facilitated creative writing workshops at Fountain House in NYC.
