Kelly Mathews

Kelly Mathews is an artist from St Joseph, MI. Her history with addiction, rehab, recovery and Bipolar disorder lend her a unique perspective on the world around her. Primarily using encaustic and photography, her work deals with social and political issues and erasing the stigma of mental illness.
I am currently the Artist in Residence for the Ryan Licht Sang Bipolar Foundation. My solo exhibit, "Being Bipolar in a Polarized World" has toured many Universities and Art Centers in the Midwest. My current collaboration with artist Caren Helen Rudman "Whisper 2 A Scream - the mental, the physical, and the Neuro Art Journey" has opened to critical acclaim. I have been a panelist for the International Bipolar Conference, a featured speaker for the Stiles- Nicholson Brain Institute, and am now a partner in McLean Hospital's Deconstructing Stigma program.
Interests
Collaborating on anything using the arts as a tool for understanding and healing. My own story is one of going from "Surviving" to "Thriving" by using the power of the arts to heal. I have two art exhibits that are ready to go for interested institutions -
1. Being Bipolar in a Polarized World
2. Whisper 2 A Scream - The Mental, The Physical, and the Neuroarts Journey
