Dr. Kristin Norderval, PhD

I am a freelance composer and classical singer. I specialize in works for voice and technology, interdisciplinary & collaborative works, and small scale opera. I made my living first as a soloist, primarily in baroque and contemporary music. I´ve been privileged to work with many renowned composers, particularly in New York. For the last 2 decades I have focused primarily on my own artistic work.
I am a dual citizen of the US and Norway. I finished a PhD in Artistic Research at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Academy of Opera in December 2023, and have been thrilled since then to work with the gestural controller system that I developed for real-time audio processing of the classical voice - the Expanded Vocal Improvising Instrument. At the same time that I finished my PhD, I was diagnosed with Parkinson´s disease. I am still composing and performing, and I now have an additional research interest; to explore neuroplasticity and the effects of music for healing not only the soul, but the brain and body as well.
