Patti Bonnet

I have spent the bulk of my career as an independent documentary filmmaker, where my work has focused on refugees and migration, mental health, social and environmental justice and cultural awareness.
I love to create media, art, and events as a tool for education, inspiration and community building.
I returned to graduate school in the Fall of 2026 to study digital media so I can learn more contemporary methods of storytelling that speak to younger generations. I'm really excited about this opportunity to learn new technologies and work with young people to better understand what inspires and motivates them into action.
I recently directed and produced the documentary short film "Max: One Last Favor" about my experience working with a group of former US Marines as we tried to help their Afghan interpreter get to safety after the fall of Kabul, which recently won Best Short Documentary at the Boulder International Film Festival and The Spirit of KPBS Award at the GI Film Festival in San Diego.
I was Co-Producer on "We Are Not Done Yet" for HBO Documentary Films, Line Producer on the documentary feature "Racing Extinction" (Discovery), and I served as Post-Production Consultant on "Chasing Coral "(Netflix). I Co-Directed the documentary short "Come Back to Sudan", which won the Audience Award at Aspen Shortsfest. I served as a cultural delegate for the US State Department’s 2010 American Documentary Showcase in Rwanda.
I'm thrilled to be taking the skills and experience I've garnered over the years into new directions while continuing my work to try to make the world a better place.
Interests
I'm very interested in exploring the healing power of immersive art.
In film and photography, I've worked with a number of groups (refugees, veterans, indigenous communities) that have experienced significant traumas, and I'm eager to pivot my career towards creating effective tools that help people heal.
By combining technology and art to create multi-sensory immersive experiences, I want to explore and demonstrate the efficacy of various techniques to help calm and regulate the nervous system.
I'm looking for scientific partners to help explore these techniques with me.
