Executive Director, founder (2009) The Veterans Art Project. Program developer, Artist, Instructor. Since 2009 VETARTs mission has grown beyond our wildest dreams. With our 5,000 sq ft studio and school Vetart has hosted throusands of Veterans in Northern San Diego County. VETART has performed workshops nationally with over 500 annual participants. Come visit us.
Since 2009 VetArt has offered free arts classes in ceramics, glass casting, woodworking and other modes of expression to Veterans, spouses, dependents, caregivers and active-duty personnel. Initially conceived as a transition/educational support project, this program has grown to include a greater audience and impact than we ever imagined.
VetArt has changed and adapted over the past fourteen years, helping us survive the pandemic and find our current home, the VETART School of Ceramics and Glass, a 5,000 square foot professionally equipped art studio in Vista.
The heart of our work has always been arts-based wellness- incorporating the creative process into daily lives. Participants are provided with instruction, materials, and a working art studio. Classes are offered year-round and open studio access is available six days a week.
In 2020 VetArt was awarded a three-year contract from the Mental Health Services Oversight & Accountability Commission. This statewide innovation project was created to improve Veterans’ mental health and wellness. The project centered around collaboration with eighteen veteran or arts organizations throughout California and the production of public pop-up art events designed to increase Veteran wellness and support advocacy through art displays and engagement with the community. This contract afforded VETART the opportunity to create strong and lasting creative relationships with county level arts agencies, individual artists, and hundreds of veterans state-wide.
VETART received the 2020 Community Inspiration Award from the San Diego County Health Services Advisory Board for showcasing veteran artists' artwork throughout California and participating in governmental and organizational committees to advocate for the mental health benefits of art making in community.
Today, VetArt serves over 400 participants a year. Our main focus is offering classes at the school and partnering with San Diego veteran service organizations while continuing our advocacy work throughout the region.
